Happily I Collage Away!

I am still doing some watercolor doodling and fiddling- especially when I am out and about and will have time between appointments and I won’t be somewhere where I can connect to the net and do some work. I love it as a quick way to get my creative time in!

My real love though- is mixed media and collaging etc. I think I am better at this too and I truly enjoy it. So here is what I have been working on lately…

This first one is in my sketch pad. Do you watch Downtown Abby? I LOVE the Dowager Duchess character! This is one of her quotes. I fell in love with the quote first- then created the page around it. I looked all over online for an image to use and ended up with this paper doll cutout! Sweet! I used a gelli plate with some clock pieces stamps on it for the background. The plate is smaller than the pad so I used masking tape around the edges and covered it with paint using bubble wrap for texture. I used Sharpie paint pens to do the lettering and added little sparkling touches with Stickles.

I made this one for my husband who asked for a piece for his office. (I love that he loved my work enough to want some at his office!) It is an 11X14 canvas. I painted the background with a baby wipe then collaged scrapbook papers all around the edges. I added a few images of old-fashioned photographs with couples on them into the collaged papers… and tore one of the book papers into a heart and outlined it with dried peas. 🙂 The couple is a cutout I had from a class I took and I cut out various papers to fit the shape. Lastly- I added the quote. I love to print on watercolor paper and cut them out for these types of pieces. I think the weight and texture really works.

I am addicted...

I am addicted…

This last piece is not a collage like the others above. It is way brighter and way more fun! LOL It is an 8X10 piece of wood. Thought I would try something new. I cut out the pieces of the flower from fabric remnants around the house. (Bottom of the curtain in my step-sons room and one of my husband’s old shirts!) I like the quote. I think it fits the image. I like that some of the doodling that I have been doing with the water colors has come into play in my “regular art.”

Blossom!

Now that The Boy has moved away and started college, we have room in our spare room. I closed my health coaching office and I have extra furniture- it seems like a good match! The problem is- with all that stuff AND my art stuff/table, there still doesn’t seem to be enough room! LOL But for now- it works… so instead of having all my art stuff in the living room- I have been trying to keep it all in here and working on it. It’s not as much fun as working in the middle of the activity of the house- and we still have not worked on our books together in there yet- but I think it will work for us for a while! I need to put up the three canvases my BFF and I made when I first moved here- they will be in that big blank area on the wall right there!

So that is it for now… Hope you are enjoying your creative time!! Keep on, keepin’ on!

What a Lucky Girl!

So this past weekend- my husband gave me display shelves!! He is such a lover! I asked him if we could get shelves… he reminded me I wanted them until we finally got to Target to pick them up. Then when we were spending the day getting chores done-  he suggested we add putting up the shelves to the to-do list… YAY!

My Art Displayed!

My Art Displayed!

I love the way it looks. Our place is not that big- but this is perfect for the space and I will be able to rearrange the work as I need to and be able to keep the most current stuff displayed on the wall. I love that not only do I think that it looks perfect for the spot in our home, but that my husband loves to walk through the room and see my work displayed, as much as I do!

The problem was- I have one big piece; 20X24, and I didn’t want to leave that much room in the shelving. So I was kind of trying to figure out how to manage to display that piece (also knowing that I have 3 more blank canvases this size waiting to be worked on!) So I was talking to him about how we would figure this out… and he came up with the perfect solution! He removed this awesome clock I have in the kitchen/dining room (It looks good, but it stopped working!) and he put up my canvas. VOILA! Instant display space!

Big Canvas Display

So now not only is my photography displayed throughout the house, but my painting and mixed media stuff is too! FUN! (Yes, both the large photographs in these pictures are my work as well.) I am so thrilled to have this taken care of and on display!

This past weekend, on a whim, I invited my girlfriend who was coming over with her man to spend some time on Sunday for dinner and pre-season football, to work on some art with me… maybe instead of watching football. I love football, but she is not a huge fan and I just thought for some reason she might enjoy doing some art. She is the most positive, loving and sweet gal… she just seemed like she needed ART in her life! LOL So we created together… I just love sharing my art and the freedom to play and enjoy the creative process with the people in my life. She loved it too! Look at her AMAZING piece!

J's amazing piece!

She left me a “love note” of my own before she went home that evening….

Love Note!

So, as you can see, like the title of this post says… I am a lucky girl! I have art in my life, my amazing husband and I have really great friends! SCORE!

Mixed Media Monday- Monthly Dare

Can you believe it is only the middle of the month- but I have not only ONE but a couple of entries for this month’s Dare!? YAY! Here is a link to the Dare for August! (My birthday month! YAY!)  http://tracywburgos.typepad.com/treasure_the_momentlove_l/2013/08/august-2013-creative-dare-let-it-go.html

Pick a quote (Ok so I used only a single word on one- but it seemed to fit and a song on the other! LOL) and do a piece in less than 90 minutes. Now full disclosure, it doesn’t usually take me much longer than that to do a piece in any of my regular journals for a normal painting.  (The 14X17 is a bit different but I haven’t broken that out in ages!) So that is why I already have two pieces to add to the entries! YAY! I might add at least two more before the end of the month- sure would be cool to win a prize! LOL However- it is so fun to just be creative and be inspired by the group of ladies in the MMM group- that I am thrilled with just completing the Dare!

I got my new Grumbacher Opaque Watercolors the other day- another recommendation from Tracy! And I love them! I played with them for the first time in this piece here. This song had been in my head for days- it was something I needed to hear for a few days- so I thought it would be proper to memorialize it on a journal page- AND play with my water colors while I was at it. I really wanted to see what working from a black background was like. I really need to play with it more to get it as dark as I would like… but it was a fun experiment and in the end I actually kind of like the way it came out! LOL

Fun on black background

I love the way the gold and the champagne like color work together on the wings- and the white Signo pen outlining everything! I actually started the word Rejoice with silver then painted over it with gold once I did gold wings. Fun experiment!

I love the colors on this next one- (hmm now that I look at it- I can see a theme emerging here with these two pieces!) again- this was practicing with my new watercolor set. This was fun too!

These are the two I have completed for the Dare (So far!) As always- totally fun to create inspired by MMM and Tracy!!!

On the Table Tuesday

I spent a long time making this post yesterday and scheduled it for today… and it is gone! DANG IT!!

Here is what I have been working on… I am STILL loving painting and doodling with the watercolors! It is a ton of fun and very easy to just go with the flow when working on them. I got a new 24 color set of Grumbacher watercolors… so I played with them a bit this week too! YAY ME! New stuff is fun!!

I have been so blessed to have some flexibility in my schedule these days. This kind of schedule doesn’t happen for me often- so I wanted to be sure I took advantage of this time and did some creating! The other day I had a few hours in between appointments… so I took my time- brought my stuff and my iPad to my favorite local coffee shop. I drew flowers, watched Netflix and totally enjoyed my time!

Art & Me time!

Art & Me time!

This is the piece I started in that coffee shop and finished once I got home that afternoon and evening. I really love the way it came out and I love the Signo pens (Gold and White) for outlining. This is one of my new favorite pieces! I think I need to learn to do these watercolors on canvas or something so I can put them up on the shelf/wall.

These little guys were fun and quick to create. I wanted to play with the browns and tans that I don’t usually use.

Fun and quick...

Fun and quick…

I started this next one- then after painting just a few scales left it out on the table and didn’t work on it again for a few days. When I was working on it this time- I showed it to my husband- in progress- and he said… “Oh, why are you doing that fish again? You already did one like that in all browns and golds.” I DID? LOL I guess leaving it out on the table allowed him to fill in the colors in his imagination! LOL Thank you sweetie for the idea to add the tan and use gold for the tail and head! FUN! I love the outlining on this too- just gave it a little more dimension. Fun! I didn’t have any words or quotes to add- I didn’t think he needed anything else.

Here Fishy Fishy

The other day when I posted- I promised to share the piece I had done that was NOT watercolor. So here it is! I LOVE IT! I painted the background with baby wipes a la Tracy W, and used acrylic paints. I used paint pens for the details. This was a lot of fun too and I think I might hang this one up in the house too!

This was fun to do...

On the Table Tuesday

OOH I love this one… more water-color with doodling elements. This time I used a Crafters Workshop Template to create the flowers. I did the template sketch before I left the house- and did most of the coloring with the water-color crayons and painted 2/3 of the flowers with the water brush on the train and back from the Mall of America. (Had to run some errands and it is almost an hour by train and bus one way… lots of time to play!)

Love these flowers...

Love these flowers…

I finished an acrylic painting on a canvas board this week too, but I am too lazy to get off the couch right now and take a picture of it to show you! LOL (This will just give me something else to blog about later this week!)

On the Table Tuesday

So yes- another week of watercolors, playing and doodling… but so loving the results even more. So fun to just play… and I have been getting almost one a day done too- quick and easy. 🙂 I have almost filled my landscape pad. Need to be thinking of what to doodle in next! (It’s only 12 pages and I am pretty sure I pulled one out already- so 11 isn’t really too many! It’ll be a fun reminder of all the fun I have been having with it!)

So without further ado… a whole bunch of watercolor playing! (All in my 6X12 Strathmore watercolor landscape pad.)

Pretty flower- Didn't think this needed any doodling. My first time using white....

So there we go… fun times and happy painting! I am in pursuit of a little extra cash in the budget to get a few more either watercolor paints themselves or a fuller set of watercolor crayons… haven’t decided. 🙂

What are you working on?

Still Having Too Much Fun

I have given up my stupid phone games and replaced them with the watercolor crayons, water brush and a few markers! (Well most of the time anyway!) And I am enjoying my artsy-fartsy freedom. The sketchbook(s) are getting full and I just don’t care if they are works of “ART” or just learning fun.

HOWEVER- I am getting better… at least I think so! LOL It was is really hard to do some of this and show it to you- because I am really NOT that good at it. I am good at collage and paint and that kind of art- but art that involves drawing… well I am just not! LOL And it has been painful for me to show you this stuff because I am just not that proud of it. (However, some of this stuff in the post tonight- I like! I really like! LOL)

Sketching page- sun/flower... whatever! LOL

Sketching page- sun/flower… whatever! LOL

BUT- here for example- this flower? When it was a sketch? I took a picture of it and texted it to my sister. (You know- the sister the artist who can draw…) I asked “What do I have to do to make this look like a ball of fire?” Her response- “Add Flames!” LOL I thought those WERE flames! LOL FRAK! But I do think it turned into a lovely lily… When I sent her THIS version? She texted back “My man thinks it looks like the sun!” LOL UGH!!!!

But here- I think I redeemed myself with THIS sun! I find I am liking the bright colors, but since I have always loved a bit of a grunge look- I started this page by simply cleaning off my brush on the page with all different colors- there is some blue, some purple, some pink etc… then I sketched in pencil the sun, colored it in with the watercolor and then doodled and outlined the flames and just generally enjoyed myself- painting late into the night one night when my husband was out-of-town.

Sunshine!

BUT- THIS painting? It was my first that I did not sketch anything first- but just used my new watercolor paints (not the crayons) and just played and learned how to use the paint and the new brushes I got. (Didn’t even use the water brushes on this one!) Once I was done painting, I took the paint pen and my PITT pens and added details. I added a quote into the bark- hoping it kind of looked like bark and yes was a quote too.. See how clever I am! LOL

Watercolor Tree

Watercolor Tree

(I kind of wish I had thrown in a little more of that blue stripe like color across the whole thing- not just the left side. But hey- I am learning right?! That is actually what inspired me to do the colors on the sun before hand, so it served some purpose!)

I have 3-4 new works in my sketch book right now too. (Two and a half I did just today! Brought my sketch book to the coffee-house instead of my laptop! THAT was therapy!) However, I want to add some quotes and maybe a few more doodles before I show you all… but seriously- this is fun.

One thing I have really noticed is how easy it is to blend colors. I am not that good at blending colors when they are acrylic… heck since I cannot draw- I cannot paint drawing either ya know? But bending water colors is fun… red hearts can be lighter and orangey in the center- and flowers can have white centers that gradually turn purple on the edges… THAT is fun! LOL

WOW- could I have said  typed the word FUN more times in this post? LOL But for real!!!

What new discovery have you been having FUN with lately? I know there is something…. 🙂
