{FLY}

My husband really likes this one (which is so fun!) and so do I. It was nice to just sit down on a weekend and do some creating!

{FLY}

{FLY}

I started it with just a light watercolor background… I knew it would not stay all bright and cheery (not that many of my pieces are bright!) I made the background in the middle of the week- actually did it on the bus on my way running a few errands last week. (Gotta love water brushes and watercolor crayons!)

Then the other night- I woke up around 2am and couldn’t fall back asleep- so at 3am I decided to just get up and work on this piece. I had been thinking about it while I was trying to sleep! LOL So with some yummy leftovers (why was I HUNGRY at 3am?!) and Jimmy Fallon on the DVR I added the branches and then the molding paste to the bird stencil and voila!

So yesterday all I had to do was to “grunge” it up a little. I didn’t use any paintbrushes (Well except for the white lines in the corners at the very end!) Thanks Tracy W for showing us the “baby-wipes” painting technique! I used baby wipes, and that small piece of bubble wrap and lots of smaller movements to get the color I wanted… I even employed my own body parts! (Just a finger! What were YOU thinking?!) The final step was gluing the piece of twine I found in my “box of goodies” to make the branches have more texture. ๐Ÿ™‚

Supplies!

Supplies! (Totally going crazy using that stamp on everything these days!)ย

And again- here is the finished product… Just enjoying the process… Already have an idea- it’s an old one resurfaced- for my next piece. It’s kind of large- so it could be a while in the making! We’ll see!

Word of the Year- One Little Word

So- I know it’s already February… but hey! Cut a girl some slack… ย So I have done One Little Word every year for quite a while. I started with my scrapbooking and as my art has evolved- so have my Word of the Year projects… One year it was just the word- cut out with my Cricut- and taped to the bathroom mirror! But hey- it got the job done! If you are not familiar with One Little Word- here is a link-ย http://aliedwards.com/blog/one-little-word

So- my word? EMBRACE! There is so many things I want to embrace this year- the journey- all the good all the bad and the path I am on!

So here is the project I created to remind me to EMBRACE my life in 2014!

I love using my Gelli Plate- even when the size is smaller than the canvas- you can make it all work out. So the background is gelli plate, baby wipe painting and copper ink and stamps.

IMG_1334 IMG_1335 IMG_1336Then I tore up pieces of paper to create the body of the bird and collaged them on the board, added bling and a few doodles- the word- and called it done!

Do you pick a word of your year? How are you doing keeping it in the front of your mind?

Happily I Collage Away!

I am still doing some watercolor doodling and fiddling- especially when I am out and about and will have time between appointments and I won’t be somewhere where I can connect to the net and do some work. I love it as a quick way to get my creative time in!

My real love though- is mixed media and collaging etc. I think I am better at this too and I truly enjoy it. So here is what I have been working on lately…

This first one is in my sketch pad. Do you watch Downtown Abby? I LOVE the Dowager Duchess character! This is one of her quotes. I fell in love with the quote first- then created the page around it. I looked all over online for an image to use and ended up with this paper doll cutout! Sweet! I used a gelli plate with some clock pieces stamps on it for the background. The plate is smaller than the pad so I used masking tape around the edges and covered it with paint using bubble wrap for texture. I used Sharpie paint pens to do the lettering and added little sparkling touches with Stickles.

I made this one for my husband who asked for a piece for his office. (I love that he loved my work enough to want some at his office!) It is an 11X14 canvas. I painted the background with a baby wipe then collaged scrapbook papers all around the edges. I added a few images of old-fashioned photographs with couples on them into the collaged papers… and tore one of the book papers into a heart and outlined it with dried peas. ๐Ÿ™‚ The couple is a cutout I had from a class I took and I cut out various papers to fit the shape. Lastly- I added the quote. I love to print on watercolor paper and cut them out for these types of pieces. I think the weight and texture really works.

I am addicted...

I am addicted…

This last piece is not a collage like the others above. It is way brighter and way more fun! LOL It is an 8X10 piece of wood. Thought I would try something new. I cut out the pieces of the flower from fabric remnants around the house. (Bottom of the curtain in my step-sons room and one of my husband’s old shirts!) I like the quote. I think it fits the image. I like that some of the doodling that I have been doing with the water colors has come into play in my “regular art.”

Blossom!

Now that The Boy has moved away and started college, we have room in our spare room. I closed my health coaching office and I have extra furniture- it seems like a good match! The problem is- with all that stuff AND my art stuff/table, there still doesn’t seem to be enough room! LOL But for now- it works… so instead of having all my art stuff in the living room- I have been trying to keep it all in here and working on it. It’s not as much fun as working in the middle of the activity of the house- and we still have not worked on our books together in there yet- but I think it will work for us for a while! I need to put up the three canvases my BFF and I made when I first moved here- they will be in that big blank area on the wall right there!

So that is it for now… Hope you are enjoying your creative time!! Keep on, keepin’ on!

What a Lucky Girl!

So this past weekend- my husband gave me display shelves!! He is such a lover! I asked him if we could get shelves… he reminded me I wanted them until we finally got to Target to pick them up. Then when we were spending the day getting chores done- ย he suggested we add putting up the shelves to the to-do list… YAY!

My Art Displayed!

My Art Displayed!

I love the way it looks. Our place is not that big- but this is perfect for the space and I will be able to rearrange the work as I need to and be able to keep the most current stuff displayed on the wall. I love that not only do I think that it looks perfect for the spot in our home, but that my husband loves to walk through the room and see my work displayed, as much as I do!

The problem was- I have one big piece; 20X24, and I didn’t want to leave that much room in the shelving. So I was kind of trying to figure out how to manage to display that piece (also knowing that I have 3 more blank canvases this size waiting to be worked on!) So I was talking to him about how we would figure this out… and he came up with the perfect solution! He removed this awesome clock I have in the kitchen/dining room (It looks good, but it stopped working!) and he put up my canvas. VOILA! Instant display space!

Big Canvas Display

So now not only is my photography displayed throughout the house, but my painting and mixed media stuff is too! FUN! (Yes, both the large photographs in these pictures are my work as well.) I am so thrilled to have this taken care of and on display!

This past weekend, on a whim, I invited my girlfriend who was coming over with her man to spend some time on Sunday for dinner and pre-season football, to work on some art with me… maybe instead of watching football. I love football, but she is not a huge fan and I just thought for some reason she might enjoy doing some art. She is the most positive, loving and sweet gal… she just seemed like she needed ART in her life! LOL So we created together… I just love sharing my art and the freedom to play and enjoy the creative process with the people in my life. She loved it too! Look at her AMAZING piece!

J's amazing piece!

She left me a “love note” of my own before she went home that evening….

Love Note!

So, as you can see, like the title of this post says… I am a lucky girl! I have art in my life, my amazing husband and I have really great friends! SCORE!

Mixed Media

It’s been a while since I showed you (or even did) some Mixed Media stuff…

I LOVE the way these came out. They were just quick and easy too… everything just fell together.

I made this card first- we had a young friend of ours, Chantal one of the servers next door at our local bar, pass away- and this was the card I made for the rest of our friends at the bar. My Guy gave me the idea for the words- they are lyrics to a Jethro Tull song. They really seemed to fit.

So- the page- as well as this card are a tribute to our young friend- Chantal. Gone too soon at age 24. RIP

Still Having Too Much Fun

I have given up my stupid phone games and replaced them with the watercolor crayons, water brush and a few markers! (Well most of the time anyway!) And I am enjoying my artsy-fartsy freedom. The sketchbook(s) are getting full and I just don’t care if they are works of “ART” or just learning fun.

HOWEVER- I am getting better… at least I think so! LOL It was is really hard to do some of this and show it to you- because I am really NOT that good at it. I am good at collage and paint and that kind of art- but art that involves drawing… well I am just not! LOL And it has been painful for me to show you this stuff because I am just not that proud of it. (However, some of this stuff in the post tonight- I like! I really like! LOL)

Sketching page- sun/flower... whatever! LOL

Sketching page- sun/flower… whatever! LOL

BUT- here for example- this flower? When it was a sketch? I took a picture of it and texted it to my sister. (You know- the sister the artist who can draw…) I asked “What do I have to do to make this look like a ball of fire?” Her response- “Add Flames!” LOL I thought those WERE flames! LOL FRAK! But I do think it turned into a lovely lily… When I sent her THIS version? She texted back “My man thinks it looks like the sun!” LOL UGH!!!!

But here- I think I redeemed myself with THIS sun! I find I am liking the bright colors, but since I have always loved a bit of a grunge look- I started this page by simply cleaning off my brush on the page with all different colors- there is some blue, some purple, some pink etc… then I sketched in pencil the sun, colored it in with the watercolor and then doodled and outlined the flames and just generally enjoyed myself- painting late into the night one night when my husband was out-of-town.

Sunshine!

Sunshine!

BUT- THIS painting? It was my first that I did not sketch anything first- but just used my new watercolor paints (not the crayons) and just played and learned how to use the paint and the new brushes I got. (Didn’t even use the water brushes on this one!) Once I was done painting, I took the paint pen and my PITT pens and added details. I added a quote into the bark- hoping it kind of looked like bark and yes was a quote too.. See how clever I am! LOL

Watercolor Tree

Watercolor Tree

(I kind of wish I had thrown in a little more of that blue stripe like color across the whole thing- not just the left side. But hey- I am learning right?! That is actually what inspired me to do the colors on the sun before hand, so it served some purpose!)

I have 3-4 new works in my sketch book right now too. (Two and a half I did just today! Brought my sketch book to the coffee-house instead of my laptop! THAT was therapy!) However, I want to add some quotes and maybe a few more doodles before I show you all… but seriously- this is fun.

One thing I have really noticed is how easy it is to blend colors. I am not that good at blending colors when they are acrylic… heck since I cannot draw- I cannot paint drawing either ya know? But bending water colors is fun… red hearts can be lighter and orangey in the center- and flowers can have white centers that gradually turn purple on the edges… THAT is fun! LOL

WOW- could I have saidย  typed the word FUN more times in this post? LOL But for real!!!

What new discovery have you been having FUN with lately? I know there is something…. ๐Ÿ™‚

Been Slacking a Bit…

on the posting… but I have been getting my Art on… though just a little less than before. It ebbs and flows doesn’t it?

I got this great piece done this weekend. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I wish I had made it as a canvas instead of a page in my 9X12 Sketch book- because I would so hang this on the wall or give it as a gift. (I have a few “Shoe People” in my life- You know who you are!- who might like this as well!)

So without further ado here it is… starting with the awesome Gelli Plate background! I love the way this turned out! I watched a few tutorials to learn some better techniques and I did this background one color at a time. LOVE my Gelli Plate!

Gelli Plate background and Washi Tape Border

Once I had the background done… I added the SHOE chipboard embellishment (Which I had already painted that awesome blue and added the bling- it was partly the inspiration for the background colors!) then I added all the little floral and bling touches! I found a quote I liked on the internet and the rest is history… or Art… ๐Ÿ™‚

Here are a few close-up shots of the piece.

As I was making the background- I used the excess paint on the Gelli plate, the bubble wrap and the other items I used to make it- to make a background in my awesome 5X7 journal. I can’t wait to make a page on this one now!

I also made an awesome card and matching journal page a few days ago. Will have to show you that soon- but I sent the card to a friend. So I need to wait until she gets it before I post! ๐Ÿ™‚

ENJOY YOUR ART!!! What have you been working on? I know a bunch of you have been experimenting with your Gelli Plates too… Hope you are having fun!
