Happily I Collage Away!

I am still doing some watercolor doodling and fiddling- especially when I am out and about and will have time between appointments and I won’t be somewhere where I can connect to the net and do some work. I love it as a quick way to get my creative time in!

My real love though- is mixed media and collaging etc. I think I am better at this too and I truly enjoy it. So here is what I have been working on lately…

This first one is in my sketch pad. Do you watch Downtown Abby? I LOVE the Dowager Duchess character! This is one of her quotes. I fell in love with the quote first- then created the page around it. I looked all over online for an image to use and ended up with this paper doll cutout! Sweet! I used a gelli plate with some clock pieces stamps on it for the background. The plate is smaller than the pad so I used masking tape around the edges and covered it with paint using bubble wrap for texture. I used Sharpie paint pens to do the lettering and added little sparkling touches with Stickles.

I made this one for my husband who asked for a piece for his office. (I love that he loved my work enough to want some at his office!) It is an 11X14 canvas. I painted the background with a baby wipe then collaged scrapbook papers all around the edges. I added a few images of old-fashioned photographs with couples on them into the collaged papers… and tore one of the book papers into a heart and outlined it with dried peas. 🙂 The couple is a cutout I had from a class I took and I cut out various papers to fit the shape. Lastly- I added the quote. I love to print on watercolor paper and cut them out for these types of pieces. I think the weight and texture really works.

I am addicted...

I am addicted…

This last piece is not a collage like the others above. It is way brighter and way more fun! LOL It is an 8X10 piece of wood. Thought I would try something new. I cut out the pieces of the flower from fabric remnants around the house. (Bottom of the curtain in my step-sons room and one of my husband’s old shirts!) I like the quote. I think it fits the image. I like that some of the doodling that I have been doing with the water colors has come into play in my “regular art.”

Blossom!

Now that The Boy has moved away and started college, we have room in our spare room. I closed my health coaching office and I have extra furniture- it seems like a good match! The problem is- with all that stuff AND my art stuff/table, there still doesn’t seem to be enough room! LOL But for now- it works… so instead of having all my art stuff in the living room- I have been trying to keep it all in here and working on it. It’s not as much fun as working in the middle of the activity of the house- and we still have not worked on our books together in there yet- but I think it will work for us for a while! I need to put up the three canvases my BFF and I made when I first moved here- they will be in that big blank area on the wall right there!

So that is it for now… Hope you are enjoying your creative time!! Keep on, keepin’ on!

Been Slacking a Bit…

on the posting… but I have been getting my Art on… though just a little less than before. It ebbs and flows doesn’t it?

I got this great piece done this weekend. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I wish I had made it as a canvas instead of a page in my 9X12 Sketch book- because I would so hang this on the wall or give it as a gift. (I have a few “Shoe People” in my life- You know who you are!- who might like this as well!)

So without further ado here it is… starting with the awesome Gelli Plate background! I love the way this turned out! I watched a few tutorials to learn some better techniques and I did this background one color at a time. LOVE my Gelli Plate!

Once I had the background done… I added the SHOE chipboard embellishment (Which I had already painted that awesome blue and added the bling- it was partly the inspiration for the background colors!) then I added all the little floral and bling touches! I found a quote I liked on the internet and the rest is history… or Art… 🙂

Here are a few close-up shots of the piece.

As I was making the background- I used the excess paint on the Gelli plate, the bubble wrap and the other items I used to make it- to make a background in my awesome 5X7 journal. I can’t wait to make a page on this one now!

I also made an awesome card and matching journal page a few days ago. Will have to show you that soon- but I sent the card to a friend. So I need to wait until she gets it before I post! 🙂

ENJOY YOUR ART!!! What have you been working on? I know a bunch of you have been experimenting with your Gelli Plates too… Hope you are having fun!

Just a Little Something…

So I have not been creative lately. Seriously missing the art in my life… but with vacation and other things it has been difficult to fit in. I will make sure I will do it soon.

In the meantime- since I usually post what’s on my table on Tuesdays… I was thinking I could post something I haven’t shown you yet.

Butterfly 1

Butterfly 1

This was one of my first attempts with the gelli plate. I used it on the background… and I LOVE the effect! It makes the background very nice- better than just straight painting it. (This is an 8X10 black canvas. It is also the first time I have used one of those.) After I painted it- I used a glue gun to outline the whole thing- and used silver metallic rub-ons on the glue to accent it.

This was a fun quick and relatively simple canvas. But it was fun to create and try new techniques. between the gelli plate and using the glue gun.. I really love the result. I just need to seal it with decoupage and I think it will make its way to my BFF who really loves butterflies!

Thanks for checking it out. Now to figure out how to fit in some art this week!! 🙂 Have a project that is SOOO waiting to be finished!

What is on YOUR table this week??? Link it back to here in your comment- I’d love to see!

On the Table Tuesday…

So since the project on my table right now is… UBER COOL… and I want it to be finished before I show it off… LOL I decided I should FINALLY post the images of the finished On the Table Tuesday from weeks ago! The one that went through so many transformations and took so long!

On my Table April 2, 2013

On my Table April 2, 2013

This is how it started… I covered an 18X24 canvas with blue polka dot tissue paper and started trying to add “stuff” to it. But I was just not feeling it…

In progress...

In progress…

See… it was just not working! (Though I DO love my Sand Hill Crane cut out and need to figure out how I am going to use that someday!)

So I scrapped the whole idea and started again… using the lovely texture that the tissue paper created on the base and going a whole new direction!

How it started... Sort of...

How it started… Sort of…

Now there is something I could work with! (Most of the time I find I am just not a bright colors kind of girl… but that is not to say NEVER! <wink!>)

Middle- starting to take real shape..

Middle- starting to take real shape..

I cut out a heart from musical note paper- that already had a stamped style image on it. I used my awesome Gelli plate to add reds and yellows to it- and decoupaged it onto the canvas. Once that dried I covered the whole heart with clear gel to give it a thick raised feel and additional texture.

Still in Progress

Still in Progress

I added wings to it- by cutting out a paper design and tracing it onto the canvas to make the wings the same on both sides. I covered the wings first  with a layer of gesso, then I used modeling paste mixed both with suede and champagne paint color- allowed to dry then covered them both with Art Anthology Sorbet- Dimensional gel paint- to add sparkle and more texture and then outlined the wings with the Art Anthology Dimensional crystal- Blizzard. Love the way those products added such a nice touch to the overall image! I outlined the heart with split peas to make it distinct.

Then the finishing touches were in order!

Top Border

Bottom Border

I used my glue gun to create swirly accents on the bottom and top of the canvas to add borders. I painted flowers with a red paint/modeling paste mixture- then added the glue gun swirlies. To color them and the split peas I added for even more dimension- I rubbed on some copper metallic rub on. (Almost out of the copper! I need to figure out where I got this stuff and make sure I can get more!)

And Voila! FINALLY FINISHED! YAY! (Now to put up those shelfs so I can display my work in the living room!)

FInished Project

Finished Project

I wish you could see how wonderfully shimmery the wings are with the Art Anthology Sorbet on them- they really just add sooo much to the whole piece!

This took me what felt like forever- but it was so much fun and so worth the effort of each layer and letting it all dry and working on it for so long. It was comforting to have it on the table each time I went there to work- knowing it was taking shape and becoming something.

So there it is! Finally here to show those of you who saw it all along and were wondering what had become of it!

Thanks for looking! What is on YOUR table this week?

On the Table Tuesday…

Well- seems like I only blog on Tuesdays- but hey! At least I am blogging AND more importantly… creating!

This weekend was Art-A-Whirl in my neck of the woods. The country’s largest Art Crawl. Hundreds of artist’s open studios and galleries open to the public all weekend to promote and support the arts. The neighborhood (Actually a conglomerate of very closely knit neighborhoods) I live in is considered the Arts District of Minneapolis. It’s pretty cool. We got out with both the Big Kids at different times over the weekend to tour some of these warehouses with open studios and see a ton of amazing and some pretty crazy- art work. There is also awesome food trucks and great live music all weekend too!

I planned ahead of time to take advantage of the creative vibe that would be going on all weekend- and hoped to get at least two pieces done… and I did! YAY!

Trust...

Trust…

This is a canvas board and for a few projects I used it to wipe off my  paint brush and stencils etc. It made such a pretty background. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it- so it has been sitting on a shelf with my supplies. Lately- I have really been learning how to TRUST the Lord for managing my life and my dreams. It has been a really incredible journey and I felt like I wanted to kind of commemorate this time of my life in my art- so this piece was born. I had originally thought I would do a longer quote- but with only one pack of the letter stickers I wanted to use- and those being already open… LOL This was the phrase my husband helped me come up with to still convey the message- but use the letters I had on hand!

Side View- Trust

Side View- Trust

I cut out the butterflies from printed clip art. Then I covered them in Art Anthology Sorbet- a clear glittery paint. (You can’t really see the glitter in the photos.) As they dried- they curled naturally and I also kind of helped form them so they would have more dimension when I added them to the page. I added split peas for the bodies and painted them coordinating colors.

Trust- last view

Trust- last view

I knew I wasn’t going to be able to seal the whole thing with the butterflies on it- since they needed to pop off the page- so I started to decoupage the canvas with a nice glossy medium- but realized that some of the color I had used (the brown and some of the white) were “washes”… water with a little paint mixed in- so using brush strokes was smearing the color… so I ended up using a styrofoam brush to dab all the decoupage on to seal that color in carefully. Once it dried, I did it again with the brush. Then added the stickers and butterflies. I am really pleased with how this came out. It’s a little busy but it makes me happy!

The second piece I finished has kind of been in my head for a while- a train is the theme. When I saw this 10×20 linen colored canvas board I knew this was where I would put that train. (I have never done trains or even really objects like this- but this was what was coming up so I figured why not go with it!?)

Dream Train

Dream Train

It was important to me as part of this piece, that everything be text-based (after all what are dreams but visual words?!) So the background is pages of a book pulled out, cut and inked on the edges (I have two altered books I have done pages in and keep around for this exact type of purpose.) The wings are the same paper- with a Gelli Plate background on them. (THAT was fun! I have been watching videos and tutorials on using the Gelli Plate.) The scrapbook papers I used all have text on them as well. I wish I had made the “engine car” with more of a triangle on the front (the cow pusher thingy) so it looked less like a cab of an 18- wheeler and more like a train engine- but hey- it’s my first train! I love the pearl smoke! That worked out great! So glad I remembered that I had that sticker!

So there we have it! I think I am working on a large wings project next- this week in theory is a slow week at work- so if I can get motivated- then I will get started on that project… Right now? I really ought to be switching over my winter/summer closet! LOL

What’s on YOUR table today?

On the Table Tuesday

So- today? On the Table? NADA! Absolutely nothing! Because I took the table down!! LOL

Where "the table" used to be! My REAL living room!

Where “the table” used to be! My REAL living room!

I was sitting at my desk yesterday yesterday-  I looked up and saw my table- and I swear for the first time- I think I saw what my husband sees… It just looked messy and not cool. So- I took it down. I will put it up on Saturday- (The country’s largest Art Crawl happens in my neighborhood this weekend- so there will be a LOT of art vibrations happening and I plan to take advantage of it!- Check it out here… http://nemaa.org/art-a-whirl ) but it has been up for almost 6 months- so I figure I can allow our home to look a little neater for at least a few days!! 🙂

However- I won’t leave you missing out… I DID work on something this weekend… I actually FINISHED two projects! You know that ONE that has been hanging around forever- On the Table Tuesday for like a month? FINALLY DONE! (BUT I have a feeling I want to make just a few more quick changes to it! LOL) I will save that piece to give us something to “talk about” in another post this week.

So for today- I will show you the other piece I finished. I started it AND finished it all on Sunday! This piece came out of my head fast and furious. I started in church! I know, I know, I should have been paying attention to the sermon- but this darn Dragonfly was just buzzing around in there just trying to get out!

Dragonfly 11X14

Dragonfly 11X14

When we got home from church- I immediately went out to the art store. So exciting to have one right down the street! (My budget might not appreciate it much though!) I knew I needed some of that sparkly dark red and blue paper. To be honest- I was thinking of a little bit greener blue- but they didn’t have that color in the sparkly paper I was looking for… but this ended up being perfect- I had the blue golden paint that matches it almost exactly!

New Art Store!!!

New Art Store!!!

So- I painted the 11X14 canvas all blue. I used my Gelli Plate with white champagne, a slightly different shade of blue,  and some gold to give the background some contrast and kind of texture. Then I added the red border. The red is a little more glossy- its a nice contrast. I tried to use a dimensional paint to border the red border- but it was getting too thick so I wiped it off and ditched that idea.

Close Up

Then I dug through all my old scrapbooking embellies and went to town looking for the perfect little round bits for the body! I think I found the perfect items!

Another angle

Another angle

Lastly I cut the wings out of the sparkly paper and glued the whole thing down! Super quick and easy! I usually like to seal my works with a layer of modge podge- but I worry that the layer would really diminish the prettiness of the shiny paper- so I figure I will just leave it as is.

So there it is! I totally enjoyed how quickly this piece came together! It was nice to finish a decent sized piece in one afternoon! Have some ideas for two new pieces- hopefully next weekend with all the art vibes going on- I can get those both done too! (One already has a completed background so it shouldn’t be too bad!)

So- what are you working on??

La-

On the Table Tuesday

Well hopefully you will not get tired of seeing this piece…. I promise it is ALMOST finished! LOL

Still in Progress

Still in Progress

I know it does’t look THAT different from the last time I showed it sitting here on my table… but it is! Before the wings were just a gesso outline- now they have had two layers of modeling paste to give them a little more texture (one layer with suede paint and one layer with a little more shimmery champagne color.) Then I used my brand new Art Anthology Sorbet- Dimensional gel paint- Splashed to add sparkle and more texture and outlined the wings with the Art Anthology Dimensional crystal- Blizzard.  I also added flowers at the top and the bottom. These flowers will anchor some swirly lines I plan to add to kind of frame the whole thing… and then I will finally be pretty much done! LOL We’ll see how many more weeks of “On the Table Tuesday” this piece hangs around!

Close up of Wings

Close up of Wings

I’m definitely enjoying the process- and for me that’s good enough for now! I definitely needed the process this weekend. Some things in my life are UBER stressful right now- and sitting down at the table layering modeling paste and glittery color is exactly what I needed (well that a run and a good snuggle from the husband!)

Speaking of the husband! Look what he put together for me this weekend!

Organizing!

Organizing!

As I mentioned in my post yesterday- I do believe his expectation was that once I filled these drawers that I would cart them off into the other room so that they would no longer be cluttering up the living room- except I am still working on something!! LOL (Next week I am having a Pampered Chef party- so I think I will be taking down the table and everything for that event. I might leave it all down for the whole weekend- to help him out a little!) You see that brown box under the table? (Still full of stuff?) ALL my paints and stuff like that was in there- it is now all in the drawers! Everything that is in that box was literally just sitting in the big chair that this table is blocking. No wonder it was all starting to make him crazy! Heck- it was starting to make ME crazy! I like having a new place to keep things organized. I just wish the drawers were big enough to hold my 12X12 templates. They are on top though- so they are at least neatly put  somewhere- not just laid on the bookshelves! (Like the art that is stashed there just above the table! We are going to buy a few shelves this week for me to use to display my work in the house.)

I bought a new smaller mini (5X7) art journal.. so this weekend while modeling paste and glittery Sorbet was drying- I worked on two quick pages- I like this size- made quick easy but nice pages. A little more personal for some reason- but as always- I enjoyed the process and really didn’t start with much in mind except the colors I wanted to use… 🙂

5X7 Journal Pages

5X7 Journal Pages

So these are also part of the “On the Table” this week because I just finished them! 🙂

What are you working on this week?
