Been Slacking a Bit…

on the posting… but I have been getting my Art on… though just a little less than before. It ebbs and flows doesn’t it?

I got this great piece done this weekend. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I wish I had made it as a canvas instead of a page in my 9X12 Sketch book- because I would so hang this on the wall or give it as a gift. (I have a few “Shoe People” in my life- You know who you are!- who might like this as well!)

So without further ado here it is… starting with the awesome Gelli Plate background! I love the way this turned out! I watched a few tutorials to learn some better techniques and I did this background one color at a time. LOVE my Gelli Plate!

Once I had the background done… I added the SHOE chipboard embellishment (Which I had already painted that awesome blue and added the bling- it was partly the inspiration for the background colors!) then I added all the little floral and bling touches! I found a quote I liked on the internet and the rest is history… or Art… 🙂

Here are a few close-up shots of the piece.

As I was making the background- I used the excess paint on the Gelli plate, the bubble wrap and the other items I used to make it- to make a background in my awesome 5X7 journal. I can’t wait to make a page on this one now!

I also made an awesome card and matching journal page a few days ago. Will have to show you that soon- but I sent the card to a friend. So I need to wait until she gets it before I post! 🙂

ENJOY YOUR ART!!! What have you been working on? I know a bunch of you have been experimenting with your Gelli Plates too… Hope you are having fun!

On the Table Tuesday…

So since the project on my table right now is… UBER COOL… and I want it to be finished before I show it off… LOL I decided I should FINALLY post the images of the finished On the Table Tuesday from weeks ago! The one that went through so many transformations and took so long!

On my Table April 2, 2013

On my Table April 2, 2013

This is how it started… I covered an 18X24 canvas with blue polka dot tissue paper and started trying to add “stuff” to it. But I was just not feeling it…

In progress...

In progress…

See… it was just not working! (Though I DO love my Sand Hill Crane cut out and need to figure out how I am going to use that someday!)

So I scrapped the whole idea and started again… using the lovely texture that the tissue paper created on the base and going a whole new direction!

How it started... Sort of...

How it started… Sort of…

Now there is something I could work with! (Most of the time I find I am just not a bright colors kind of girl… but that is not to say NEVER! <wink!>)

Middle- starting to take real shape..

Middle- starting to take real shape..

I cut out a heart from musical note paper- that already had a stamped style image on it. I used my awesome Gelli plate to add reds and yellows to it- and decoupaged it onto the canvas. Once that dried I covered the whole heart with clear gel to give it a thick raised feel and additional texture.

Still in Progress

Still in Progress

I added wings to it- by cutting out a paper design and tracing it onto the canvas to make the wings the same on both sides. I covered the wings first  with a layer of gesso, then I used modeling paste mixed both with suede and champagne paint color- allowed to dry then covered them both with Art Anthology Sorbet- Dimensional gel paint- to add sparkle and more texture and then outlined the wings with the Art Anthology Dimensional crystal- Blizzard. Love the way those products added such a nice touch to the overall image! I outlined the heart with split peas to make it distinct.

Then the finishing touches were in order!

I used my glue gun to create swirly accents on the bottom and top of the canvas to add borders. I painted flowers with a red paint/modeling paste mixture- then added the glue gun swirlies. To color them and the split peas I added for even more dimension- I rubbed on some copper metallic rub on. (Almost out of the copper! I need to figure out where I got this stuff and make sure I can get more!)

And Voila! FINALLY FINISHED! YAY! (Now to put up those shelfs so I can display my work in the living room!)

FInished Project

Finished Project

I wish you could see how wonderfully shimmery the wings are with the Art Anthology Sorbet on them- they really just add sooo much to the whole piece!

This took me what felt like forever- but it was so much fun and so worth the effort of each layer and letting it all dry and working on it for so long. It was comforting to have it on the table each time I went there to work- knowing it was taking shape and becoming something.

So there it is! Finally here to show those of you who saw it all along and were wondering what had become of it!

Thanks for looking! What is on YOUR table this week?

Too Fun! a Random Post…

Couple of things…

1- I WON! I entered the Creative Dare (see blog post below) and I won by random drawing! COOL BEANS! I am so excited to get a basket full of Beacon Adhesive stuff!! WHOOO HOOO!! Even cooler because I completed my piece just in the nick of time! HOW FUN! I never win anything- and it was a nice surprise on a pretty stressful day!

2- There is an ART SUPPLY STORE just down the street… literally 6 blocks! I can see lunch time bike rides over to pick up “a few things!” I already know I am going to be a recognizable customer! LOL  This weekend already- I got a little bottle of Golden paint (ok 2!) a 5X7 multimedia journal pad, a couple of charcoal pencils, and some other random things… My Guy picked out some cool shimmery copper paper that he decided would make great wings for a project of mine! He was soooo right too! That is going to be fun to figure out and work on! He has such great ideas! (Probably shouldn’t bring him in there very often with me though- he saw the price on the little 2oz bottles of Golden paint- $6! He knows he sees more than just a few on my desk when I am working on something!)

3- I got a set of drawers that roll to put all my paints and a bunch of supplies in. This way I can move the stuff into the other room so it is not always out in my living room. My husband put it together- I think he was hoping I would fill it and immediately cart it all off.. but no way Jose! I have a work in progress on the table! LOL I do like being able to open the drawers and see my supplies- not dig into the bottom of a box filled with stuff to get what I need!

4- Last week I got these very cool new paints and supplies! Thank you Stayce DeWid!!! http://www.artanthologyinc.com I started to play with them a little this weekend- and used the white paints on the wings of the project that I am currently working on. So cool! Can’t wait to play with the sprays and do a couple of other things this week or next weekend! (Since the wings project is STILL On The Table- I am sure you will see it in progress tomorrow when I do On The Table Tuesday! LOL The wings sparkle!)

Free Bird

Free Bird

Free Bird

So we have established that I love birds. Good- because here is another piece of my “bird art.” I like her.. she is frilly and lacy and was a lot of fun to create.

This is a loose piece of canvas with masking tape layered on top for the background… I used the end of the paint brush to create the dots. She was one of the first birds I painted when I started taking the class on birds.

And she touched a life…

I was heading to the hair dresser when I thought to myself- I should bring Julia that bird. Then I shook it off thinking… oh yeah sure- that’s pretty full of yourself- that you think someone would want one of your art pieces- let alone one of your first. Silly Girl.

So I went without the bird. While I was in the chair and we were chatting away- “somehow” the subject of birds came up… She started telling me how caged in she used to feel and how she is learning to fly all over again and how a bird is symbolic to her of that. I told her that I ALMOST brought her the bird… she said BRING IT! I WANT IT! I showed it to her on my phone and promised that in the next few days I would stop by again with the bird in hand.

Two days later I left it in her chair and went about my business. A few weeks later when I called to make an another appointment to have my hair cut she said “I am not doing hair there anymore! Your bird gave me the courage to put an end to something that was just not working for me in my life! THANK YOU” WOW! REALLY?

She told me she has framed it and it hangs in her living room and reminds her to do things in her life that will enhance her freedom and keep her from feeling caged.

WOW! MY art did all of that? Art Heals. Art Speaks. And you don’t even have to be a master painter for the “magic” of art and the kindness of your heart to speak to people!

COOL BEANS! Now who is going to cut my hair??!! LOL

Trending Here…

You will soon notice a trend in my work… I like Birds.

Saying it like that- is actually an understatement. I REALLY LIKE BIRDS! (Even that may not be enough emphasis- but if I go too much BIGGER then I will start to come across as a freak and well… we can’t have THAT now can we?!)

My first Eagle Page

My first Eagle Page

I like birds. There- we got that out of the way- so when you see most of my work these days involves birds- it will make sense. You also need to know- I am currently taking a class that is all Birds, Butterflies and Wings! So you will be seeing a lot of the last two as well- though I really have been having too much fun with the birds to really move on to the next topics… though I started the Wings section this week and I am already ruminating some ideas!

Anyway- this Eagle is on my Mixed Media 14X17 Sketch Pad. Love this size. This is the first thing I really did in it- and it wasn’t nearly as scary as I thought it might be. I still at times prefer my 9X11 pad- but this has been a fun exploration!

I drew the bird, then covered the whole thing with a clear gel from Golden. Let that dry and painted over it to get the texture on the bird. The texture under the nest is just modeling paste smeared on there any ole way! LOL There is another spot of paste “smearing” up by the sun.

My sister- who is an amazing artist; (Dare I say a REAL artist? I say that without demeaning my own talent and joy in creating- she is jut not only good- but she excels in multiple mediums and shows her work, is on the board of a Community Arts Council etc.) she says she is always kind of surprised how I mix colors you wouldn’t think of together- together and make them work! So there ya go!

Do you find that you have themes in your work? One subject, topic, item, that comes up over and over? Does it have particular meaning? Or is is just something that is easy for you to draw? How does that work for you?

On the Table Tuesday

So what’s on your work table today? I would love to see- post and link back to this and let’s share!

******************************************************

Work in Progress

Work in Progress

I am working on this 18X24 canvas… my largest piece yet… I covered the whole thing in a blue tissue paper with red polka dots! That is all I had done when my DH came home on Saturday and he was like “COOL! That looks awesome!” I love how he is excited about my work so often. He knows I am not the world’s best artist and I wish I were even more talented- but he appreciates what it does for me… and I am a lucky girl.

OK so that was a rabbit-trail… what I meant to talk about is that I have NO FREAKIN’ CLUE where this is going. I thought I did… I did a sketch.. trashed that… cut out the Crane from another page I did and didn’t like the page- but loved the bird… you see… still unsure… and right now it looks too “childish”… I’ll get it figured out… but it might be a fun process. Nothing is stuck down but the tissue paper and the paint- so I still have a lot of options! I will be sure to share when I am done!

I also just got this totally great new container to keep some of my “stuff” in. I am a lucky girl and we have two bedrooms- but I prefer to create out in “the house” so even though we live in an apartment- that is not small but definitely is not big- my art desk/table is in the middle of our living room- so I like to try to keep it as organized a space as possible so that our life isn’t overpowered with my mess.

What’s on your table? And what is one of your favorite organizing ideas?

March Creative Dare!

There is this Facebook group that I just love being part of – Mixed Media Mondays! I have been part of the group for a while, and recently even started watching the videos (usually after Monday because evening is husband/family time.) But I love her spirit and fun and of course her work! I have learned so many new things and techniques in just a few weeks of really participating in the group! YAY!

Sooo every month she does a Creative Dare. This is the link to the Dare for March. http://tracywburgos.typepad.com/treasure_the_momentlove_l/2013/03/march-creative-dare-1.html

I thought I would finally play along! I was totally working on another page- a 14X17 sketch pad background.. but it just was not “speaking to me.” SO I ended up in my smaller 9X11 pad and with THIS!

In Your Eyes- March Dare

In Your Eyes- March Dare

In Your Eyes- by Peter Gabriel was the song I walked down the aisle to in our wedding- just about 6 months ago. 🙂 <swoon!> It was the Vitamin String Quartet version- but still! This song!

The Girl (my step-daughter) was watching me cut out this face from a Macy’s ad! and was like… “uhm… whatcha doin’?” … I responded… “I’m doing art!” LOL I have been cutting all kind of things from catalogs and advertisements… swearing that one day they will be part of my art… and yep! This one worked!

Thanks Tracy for the group and for the inspiration to really get going on my own art again!
