I Have Been Creative, Honestly!

It hasn’t really been doing my mixed media or painting and doodling- but it’s still creative. I have started to scrapbook again! Only instead of traditional 12X12 or 8X8 or whatever- layouts, I am scrapping Project Life style. They call it “Pocket Scrapping.”

Not as “creative” as my 12X12 pages but still has enough creativity to make me feel good about doing it and since it goes more quickly- I am actually DOING it and documenting our life!

I really am enjoying this outlet and it goes quickly. Yet- even without all the details and creative process of my old style of scrapping- I love having the days of our life documented!

I use this iPhone app called COLLECT to do my daily photos- then I have them printed out 3X4 along with as many extra photos as I like. If they don’t fit into the week- I do like I did in the above pages- that is the last week of January and a page of the random photos I had left for January. 🙂 About to work on my random photo page for Feb this weekend!

I also have done a few pages that are not “day/week” themed. They are more around an event or thought. They came together pretty easily too. The first one is the night The Girl and I went to the theater and the second one is Valentine’s day weekend.

Seriously- it’s a ton of fun! I won’t give up traditional scrapping on occasion- but this is working really well.  I actually did our whole honeymoon album this style but I really didn’t understand it that well so I didn’t really do any smaller photos- so it’s not as creative- but it really got me started!

Here are a few more before I go…

Are you a scrapbooker? Do you scrap traditional? Or Pocket style?

Don’t worry I won’t give up my Art- I have just been enjoying this low key way to document our life.

I did just buy an awesome creative lesson book on lettering- so be prepared to see some of my efforts in that line soon!

My husband really likes this one (which is so fun!) and so do I. It was nice to just sit down on a weekend and do some creating!

I started it with just a light watercolor background… I knew it would not stay all bright and cheery (not that many of my pieces are bright!) I made the background in the middle of the week- actually did it on the bus on my way running a few errands last week. (Gotta love water brushes and watercolor crayons!)

Then the other night- I woke up around 2am and couldn’t fall back asleep- so at 3am I decided to just get up and work on this piece. I had been thinking about it while I was trying to sleep! LOL So with some yummy leftovers (why was I HUNGRY at 3am?!) and Jimmy Fallon on the DVR I added the branches and then the molding paste to the bird stencil and voila!

So yesterday all I had to do was to “grunge” it up a little. I didn’t use any paintbrushes (Well except for the white lines in the corners at the very end!) Thanks Tracy W for showing us the “baby-wipes” painting technique! I used baby wipes, and that small piece of bubble wrap and lots of smaller movements to get the color I wanted… I even employed my own body parts! (Just a finger! What were YOU thinking?!) The final step was gluing the piece of twine I found in my “box of goodies” to make the branches have more texture. 🙂

Supplies! (Totally going crazy using that stamp on everything these days!)

And again- here is the finished product… Just enjoying the process… Already have an idea- it’s an old one resurfaced- for my next piece. It’s kind of large- so it could be a while in the making! We’ll see!

Word of the Year- One Little Word

So- I know it’s already February… but hey! Cut a girl some slack…  So I have done One Little Word every year for quite a while. I started with my scrapbooking and as my art has evolved- so have my Word of the Year projects… One year it was just the word- cut out with my Cricut- and taped to the bathroom mirror! But hey- it got the job done! If you are not familiar with One Little Word- here is a link- http://aliedwards.com/blog/one-little-word

So- my word? EMBRACE! There is so many things I want to embrace this year- the journey- all the good all the bad and the path I am on!

So here is the project I created to remind me to EMBRACE my life in 2014!

I love using my Gelli Plate- even when the size is smaller than the canvas- you can make it all work out. So the background is gelli plate, baby wipe painting and copper ink and stamps.

IMG_1334 IMG_1335 IMG_1336Then I tore up pieces of paper to create the body of the bird and collaged them on the board, added bling and a few doodles- the word- and called it done!

Do you pick a word of your year? How are you doing keeping it in the front of your mind?

Getting Back into the Swing of Things

YAY! I am back.. I have been creating again. Boy I hate those times when I just am not feeling it. Of course, all the life stressors will sometimes sap your “mojo” but I know that creating through it usually keeps me sane… I will do better! I promise! LOL

So this was my first project of the new year- I JUST realized I didn’t post it yet! (What a slacker!)

I totally just grabbed a piece of cardboard, leftover from some Christmas packaging and started painting! I wish I had taken a photo of the first version. It was bright yellow and green and looked like a kindergartener had made it! LOL

I left it sitting there overnight and the next day went in and “grunged” it up! Now- I love it! I LOVE LOVE my Sakura white, gold and black pens!

Closer up!

Closer up!

I used this cross-hatch stamp that I got YEARS and YEARS ago? Do any of you remember the scrapbook club.. Club Scrap? This cross-hatch stamp is from way back then! Boy did I LOVE getting those big “pizza boxes” of goodies! Would you believe I still have at least one that I keep paper in to this day??

Are you getting creative?

Happily I Collage Away!

I am still doing some watercolor doodling and fiddling- especially when I am out and about and will have time between appointments and I won’t be somewhere where I can connect to the net and do some work. I love it as a quick way to get my creative time in!

My real love though- is mixed media and collaging etc. I think I am better at this too and I truly enjoy it. So here is what I have been working on lately…

This first one is in my sketch pad. Do you watch Downtown Abby? I LOVE the Dowager Duchess character! This is one of her quotes. I fell in love with the quote first- then created the page around it. I looked all over online for an image to use and ended up with this paper doll cutout! Sweet! I used a gelli plate with some clock pieces stamps on it for the background. The plate is smaller than the pad so I used masking tape around the edges and covered it with paint using bubble wrap for texture. I used Sharpie paint pens to do the lettering and added little sparkling touches with Stickles.

I made this one for my husband who asked for a piece for his office. (I love that he loved my work enough to want some at his office!) It is an 11X14 canvas. I painted the background with a baby wipe then collaged scrapbook papers all around the edges. I added a few images of old-fashioned photographs with couples on them into the collaged papers… and tore one of the book papers into a heart and outlined it with dried peas. 🙂 The couple is a cutout I had from a class I took and I cut out various papers to fit the shape. Lastly- I added the quote. I love to print on watercolor paper and cut them out for these types of pieces. I think the weight and texture really works.

I am addicted...

I am addicted…

This last piece is not a collage like the others above. It is way brighter and way more fun! LOL It is an 8X10 piece of wood. Thought I would try something new. I cut out the pieces of the flower from fabric remnants around the house. (Bottom of the curtain in my step-sons room and one of my husband’s old shirts!) I like the quote. I think it fits the image. I like that some of the doodling that I have been doing with the water colors has come into play in my “regular art.”

Now that The Boy has moved away and started college, we have room in our spare room. I closed my health coaching office and I have extra furniture- it seems like a good match! The problem is- with all that stuff AND my art stuff/table, there still doesn’t seem to be enough room! LOL But for now- it works… so instead of having all my art stuff in the living room- I have been trying to keep it all in here and working on it. It’s not as much fun as working in the middle of the activity of the house- and we still have not worked on our books together in there yet- but I think it will work for us for a while! I need to put up the three canvases my BFF and I made when I first moved here- they will be in that big blank area on the wall right there!

So that is it for now… Hope you are enjoying your creative time!! Keep on, keepin’ on!

What a Lucky Girl!

So this past weekend- my husband gave me display shelves!! He is such a lover! I asked him if we could get shelves… he reminded me I wanted them until we finally got to Target to pick them up. Then when we were spending the day getting chores done-  he suggested we add putting up the shelves to the to-do list… YAY!

My Art Displayed!

My Art Displayed!

I love the way it looks. Our place is not that big- but this is perfect for the space and I will be able to rearrange the work as I need to and be able to keep the most current stuff displayed on the wall. I love that not only do I think that it looks perfect for the spot in our home, but that my husband loves to walk through the room and see my work displayed, as much as I do!

The problem was- I have one big piece; 20X24, and I didn’t want to leave that much room in the shelving. So I was kind of trying to figure out how to manage to display that piece (also knowing that I have 3 more blank canvases this size waiting to be worked on!) So I was talking to him about how we would figure this out… and he came up with the perfect solution! He removed this awesome clock I have in the kitchen/dining room (It looks good, but it stopped working!) and he put up my canvas. VOILA! Instant display space!

Big Canvas Display

So now not only is my photography displayed throughout the house, but my painting and mixed media stuff is too! FUN! (Yes, both the large photographs in these pictures are my work as well.) I am so thrilled to have this taken care of and on display!

This past weekend, on a whim, I invited my girlfriend who was coming over with her man to spend some time on Sunday for dinner and pre-season football, to work on some art with me… maybe instead of watching football. I love football, but she is not a huge fan and I just thought for some reason she might enjoy doing some art. She is the most positive, loving and sweet gal… she just seemed like she needed ART in her life! LOL So we created together… I just love sharing my art and the freedom to play and enjoy the creative process with the people in my life. She loved it too! Look at her AMAZING piece!

J's amazing piece!

She left me a “love note” of my own before she went home that evening….

Love Note!

So, as you can see, like the title of this post says… I am a lucky girl! I have art in my life, my amazing husband and I have really great friends! SCORE!

Mixed Media Monday- Monthly Dare

Can you believe it is only the middle of the month- but I have not only ONE but a couple of entries for this month’s Dare!? YAY! Here is a link to the Dare for August! (My birthday month! YAY!)  http://tracywburgos.typepad.com/treasure_the_momentlove_l/2013/08/august-2013-creative-dare-let-it-go.html

Pick a quote (Ok so I used only a single word on one- but it seemed to fit and a song on the other! LOL) and do a piece in less than 90 minutes. Now full disclosure, it doesn’t usually take me much longer than that to do a piece in any of my regular journals for a normal painting.  (The 14X17 is a bit different but I haven’t broken that out in ages!) So that is why I already have two pieces to add to the entries! YAY! I might add at least two more before the end of the month- sure would be cool to win a prize! LOL However- it is so fun to just be creative and be inspired by the group of ladies in the MMM group- that I am thrilled with just completing the Dare!

I got my new Grumbacher Opaque Watercolors the other day- another recommendation from Tracy! And I love them! I played with them for the first time in this piece here. This song had been in my head for days- it was something I needed to hear for a few days- so I thought it would be proper to memorialize it on a journal page- AND play with my water colors while I was at it. I really wanted to see what working from a black background was like. I really need to play with it more to get it as dark as I would like… but it was a fun experiment and in the end I actually kind of like the way it came out! LOL

Fun on black background

Fun on black background

I love the way the gold and the champagne like color work together on the wings- and the white Signo pen outlining everything! I actually started the word Rejoice with silver then painted over it with gold once I did gold wings. Fun experiment!

I love the colors on this next one- (hmm now that I look at it- I can see a theme emerging here with these two pieces!) again- this was practicing with my new watercolor set. This was fun too!

Close up- I love the gold Signo pen too... not just the white one...

These are the two I have completed for the Dare (So far!) As always- totally fun to create inspired by MMM and Tracy!!!
